Reuse Resource: Swap & Share Sites

February 17, 2011 Leave a comment

We’ve talked about freecycle here, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.  Re-Nest has a list of ten other sites for those looking to find creative reuse resources without having to dole out any dough.  They cover everything from baby-ware to bikes to makeup.  The one that really catches my eye is Portland, OR’s tool exchange.  I’m currently taking a woodworking class and one of the obvious benefits is access to all of the tools that would otherwise be too cost-prohibitive to own myself.  In fact, there’s a open studio class that fills up every semester with people who just want access to them.  If Portland, ME had a similar tool “club” you can bet I’d be a member.

DIY: Reclaimed Doors as Headboard

One of my girlfriend and my first purchases after moving into our first apartment together (and into the real world together, port-college) was a set of french doors from an “estate sale” (read: fancy word for a yard sale in Beverly Hills where yard sales are illegal).  They were $250 and it made no sense economically but I’m a sucker and she’s occasionally impulsive so there you have it.  Since then they’ve served various decorative functions and no practical functions, but we keep telling ourselves that we’re going to build our house around them (at least that’s the line that got us to buy them in the first place).  Anyway, Remodelista gives us another potential use for them, one I’ve seen before and have been intrigued by, though probably not for a door with glass in it: DIY: Reclaimed Doors as Headboard.

Not sure I’m a huge fan of this example but I like the idea behind it.  They’ve also got some good, location-specific resources for reclaimed doors.  Thoughts?

Rediculous Reuse: Horseshoes = World’s Most Uncomfortable Chair

While they’ve always got the best intentions, the folks at INHABITAT can be a bit hit-or-miss sometimes.  They usually err towards the former but this one is definitely in the latter category for me.  In case you couldn’t tell, it’s a chair made exclusively out of horseshoes:
